CERN Doctoral Student Program 2025 in Switzerland (Fully Funded)

CERN offers exciting opportunities for bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students to work and live in beautiful Geneva, Switzerland. The CERN Doctoral Student Program is a fantastic chance to work on your thesis while spending three years (36 months) at CERN. Whether you have already chosen your thesis topic or need time to decide, this program is for you. CERN offers full funding for doctoral students.

Participants in the Doctoral Student Program will work on topics related to fields such as applied physics, IT, mathematics, electrical, electronics, mechanical or civil engineering, instrumentation for accelerators and particle physics experiments, materials science, radiation protection, safety and environmental protection, science communication, surveying, and ultra-high vacuum systems.

Financial Benefits CERN offers the following benefits for participants:

  • A contract for 6 months, renewable up to 3 years.
  • A monthly allowance of 3868 Swiss Francs (net of tax).
  • Travel allowance (economy class air tickets).
  • A supplement if you are married or have children, depending on your situation.
  • Health insurance.
  • 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
  • Note: CERN does not cover tuition fees at your university.

Eligibility Criteria for the CERN Doctoral Student Program To apply, you must:

  • Be a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State.
  • Be enrolled in or about to start a doctoral program at a university.
  • Have completed at least 18 months of undergraduate studies (Bachelor’s or Master’s).
  • Remain registered as a full-time student while at CERN.
  • Have a good knowledge of English and French.
  • Note: Proof of an English language test is not required.

  • A reference letter from your university professor (which can be uploaded by you or directly by the referee through the provided link).
